Capital Markets and Corporate Governance in Emerging Markets Conference

In his keynote speech, Borsa İstanbul Chairman & CEO İbrahim M. Turhan reminded the audience of the stories of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and İbn-i Tufeyl’s Hayy Bin Yakzan, 300 years before that, both of which tell about a man living alone on a deserted island.
“Unless you live alone on a deserted island, that is, the second that you have someone with you, you have to comply with corporate governance principles. This means you have to comply with the principles of transparency, accountability on a stable basis, fairness, and responsible code of conduct. When there are two people, unless you abide by these rules, the relationship stops being a sustainable one, and is therefore damaged. This code of conduct starts in the family and is reflected in all parts of the society.”
